About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Cámara Mágica, is a project focused on the creation of short films and children's books. We focus on the development of children's stories with cultural identity that we turn into books to be donated to children and thus, support the promotion of reading. Our commitment is to prepare from childhood a tolerant and receptive terrain for all cultures.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

We are a social children's publisher. We believe in the right of access, that is why all our books return to the place where the story was extracted and are donated to children who need to read to improve their literacy process or preserve their cultural references.
Each book is associated with a project that identifies who will be the direct beneficiaries, according to the specific needs of the localities and their impact. We generate alliances with social organisations that validate the contents and certify that the donations reach their final recipients. Through this system, we ensure the traceability of the impact of our actions and those of our donors.
Our collaborators can donate funds to deliver books to the locations of their interest or buy a copy in a 1 + 1 system, where for each book sold we donate one equal to the selected project.

How has it been spreading?

In order to involve the beneficiary communities, we publish our books through local launches and through dissemination in the media, cultural and social networks.
Our objective in the next 3 years is to generate new stories in rural locations in Latin American countries, which allow us to give value to cultures and support the promotion of literacy.
We seek to grow an average of 4 books a year in new locations. In this way, to achieve an average book donation of at least 2,000 books per year.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

There are two ways to support the project:
Online donation (Paypal and credit cards) Each donor receives the digital version of the book associated with the chosen project.
Purchase of books (online and at points of sale / bookstores) The purchase of a book allows the donation of another equal to the place where the story was extracted.

Impact & scalability

Impact & Scalability

Cámara Mágica is a beatiful project that protects local knowledge and cultural heritage by collecting children’s stories in rural areas. In addition to publishing those stories and spread them across the world, they also donate books to the communities in which the story was originated, thereby supporting the cultural identity of children living in those areas.

Mojo y el bosque de agua
The problem:In the Chiloé archipelago, two types of native forest converge: North Patagonian and Valdivian. In the last decade, 10,000 hectares have been lost. The deforestation of the forest results in: less water availability, soil erosion and a lower capacity to capture carbon that goes into the atmosphere. The idea:To transmit through a story, generated by local authors, the importance of caring for and preserving the native forest of Chiloé, inviting them to become guardians of this natural treasure. The solution:Generate 3,500 donations of the printed book to be delivered to public school children at the 5th and 6th grade levels. In this way, raise awareness about the importance of protecting species of flora - coigüe, tepu and cypress of the Guaitecas, vines, fungi, shrubs, mosses and lichens - and the habitat of endemic animals such as Darwin's frog, the mountain monkey and the chilote fox.Learn more: https://youtu.be/vzn_FfmCpuI
Proyecto Rapanui, rescate lengua original #DonaUnLibro
The problem:Around 7,000 languages are spoken in the world, of which 95% are indigenous languages. 40% of them are at risk of disappearing. Currently only 10.9% of the children who inhabit Rapa Nui understand their original language. The idea:Create, in conjunction with local organisations, a story so that the children of Rapa Nui can read in their original language and support the pronunciation aspects with the audiobook version of the story. The solution:Generate 2,000 donations - printed and audiobook versions - that cover 100% of the students of the four existing schools on the island and all the teachers, who will be provided with a guide with pedagogical resources to work at the different school levels.Learn more: https://youtu.be/8KMapr9IuaA
Cámara Mágica - Proyecto Chiloé (subtitulado)
The problem:The Chiloé archipelago, located in Chilean Patagonia, is a group of more than 40 islands with a population of over 24 thousand children between 4 and 13 years old. Given its geographical condition and its indigenous heritage - a mixture of Huilliches and Chonos - it has developed a unique culture in the world. Currently, there are no books of children's stories that give an account of the traditions of the sector. The idea:Rescue from local authors cultural references typical of the Chiloé culture. In this case, the process of spinning and dyeing wool, one of the most traditional trades in the archipelago. The solution:Generate 5,870 donations of the printed book to be delivered to public school children from the 1st to 4th grade levels and to teachers from 163 schools to support the pedagogical work of the text in classrooms.Learn more: https://youtu.be/tlykbWcPxXA
