Inspiring Teachers: Peer Coaching Platform

We support schools and systems help teachers make greater impact

Great teaching overpowers inequity. To us, it represents humanity at its very best. But in-low resource contexts, teachers rarely get the support to succeed. We help schools and system leaders by harnessing peer coaching to give every teacher the support they need to go from good to great.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Every child deserves a quality education. But today, a crisis in in-service support for teachers means millions of children aren't learning.

Coaching is twice as effective as centralised training. But making it work in low-resource settings means overcoming tough challenges.

We give schools and systems the tools and support to realise the potential of coaching programs in their context.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Since 2011, we have run programs across 11 countries for 5000 teachers. Participants make gains in both motivation and efficacy in using instructional strategies.

Managing up to 1500 coaching relationships at a time forced us to build tools to assure the quality of coaching. We created a suite of tools for helping teachers keep getting better:

1. The Inspiring Teaching Framework gives teachers 27 powerful techniques to tackle 9 challenges of teaching. It aligns with the World Bank’s Teach observation tool.

2. Peer coaching tools and diagnostics that guide the coaching process and equip ‘normal’ teachers to give each other high-quality coaching. Empowering teachers as coaches overcome a lack of coaches as a barrier to coaching.

3. Sessions plans that enable pedagogical leaders and principals to run practice-based training sessions.

4. Digital tools, including instructional videos and companion apps for coaches and field officers and dashboards for program managers.

How has it been spreading?

Since 2011, we have partnered with 15 local organisations to run programs.

We mobilised 2300 US and UK teachers as volunteers supporting teachers across 11 countries in implementing our tools.

In 2020 we built a new version of our framework aligning it to Wold Banks's Teach observation tools — a measure of evidence-based teaching techniques.

In December 2020, the Pace Able Foundation committed to match fund any supporter who funder in helping us strengthen our digital platform.

We are working to build new partnerships across sub-Saharan Africa and hope to be an implementor for the Education Outcomes Fund in Sierra Leone and Ghana in 2022.

In 2021, we became Inspiring Teachers and set out our manifesto to improve learning outcomes for 10 million children by 2030.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

We are always looking to learn from other organisations and find partners who share our commitment to helping teachers achieve great impact. If you'd like to learn more about our tools you can get in touch with us at:

Impact & scalability

Impact & Scalability

This peer coaching programme supports teacher professional development in-low resource contexts by facilitating knowledge-sharing and giving tools for peer-assessment. Inspiring Teachers has already scaled to more than 7 countries, showing great potential for continued growth and sustainability.

HundrED Academy Reviews
This is ensured by peer coaching, thus not depending on school leaders (principals, headmasters), promoting teacher agency. The contextualization of the project and link with teaching standards can promote sustainability and scalability.
The peer coaching model is a powerful tool to empower teachers in their local contexts. Using the World Banks' evidence based observation tools means impact is more likely to be successful in improving teacher practice.
