Empowered teacher community tackles systemic challenges through co-creation and collective action.

A community of more than 20000 educators built the fastest-growing collective educational portal in N. Macedonia. Building a portal from teachers for teachers, the EDUINO team developed 4723 video lessons, held 28 webinars, 3 Gameathoon, and gathered 1045 educational activities. Our co-creation methodology has the potential to empower teachers in any educational system across the world

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

EDUINO was a direct response to the school closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the necessity to urgently develop much-needed digital educational materials. With the introduction of the concept of crowdsourcing of openly accessible resources for everyone, we wanted to shift the narrative among the teaching community, moving them from individual thinking into inspirational collective action!

What does your innovation look like in practice?

EDUINO is a collective portal where educational materials are crowdsourced on a voluntary basis through the EDUINO community. The portal connects users to the EDUINO educational platforms, “EDUINO Schooling” and “EDUINO ECD”. There, they can select open and free verified video lessons for all educational levels These lessons are prepared by over 1000 teachers, on multiple languages and subjects based on the curricula. The portal offers professional development with video courses as well as increasingly popular webinars on topics relevant to the teacher of the 21st century. It also hosts a library of game-based activities building social-emotional competencies, for students aged 3-10, promoted by the EDUINO Gameathon.

Beyond the website, the most important aspect is the EDUINO community of educators, programmers, activists and parents who openly collaborate, co-create and support the mission to improve educational outcomes in one of the lowest-performing countries on the PISA table.

How has it been spreading?

Through a series of open crowdsourcing calls, we developed and engaged our EDUINO community to create educational materials. Each educator received specific guidance, training, and framework. Our team takes care of the technicalities and categorization. Furthermore, all of the materials go through a process of verification and approval, which ensures the quality of the content and curriculum compatibility. To spread the innovation, we've also prepared Innovation in education a how-to guide to initiate innovative practices. Other results include 4 517 393 views on the 4723 video lessons, our webinars followed by 23 001 participants, with 4000 average viewers per event and a newly launched ECD platform, offering 144 play-based activities that support socioemotional dev.

Implementation steps

Define the problem you want to solve; start small!

It’s very hard to solve a big problem such as improving the system of education. So start with an issue you are most interested in or have the people or skills to tackle. I.E. Maybe you want to work on improving the access to books and materials for teachers working in primary school.

Map the system around the problem; understand better.

Think about ways in which you can build partnerships with institutions, stakeholders, users, supporters, and potential end-users. Try to imagine how can their role be different in the development or promotion of your future solution.

Define the process.

Think about all of the steps you need to take and who should take part in each of the steps. And then for each step, map out the resources you need – the people, the finances, the technology, the expertise, etc. You won’t immediately know everything, but it’s a good start.

Gather the team and start working.

Work in an agile manner, as everything is changing fast. Be ready to move and shift things around. Use our guide for design thinking to get ahead. And don’t forget to get the user all the way down the process. You want to co-create with the users and not create for them. Be human (user) centered!

Test, test, test, then develop!

You want to avoid spending a lot of time working on a solution that in the end you find is not the thing your users need. Make sure you develop and test with the user early in the process and that you develop mock-ups, prototypes, and test ideas and designs.

Share the story and engage the community around a mission!

No solution will be efficient if you don’t rally the support from your users/ the community. Make sure that you include them by developing and sharing personal stories. People get inspired by stories and achievements they can relate to!
