The educational sector is slow to change. However through our innovation, we hope that the gap between academics & arts education in classrooms is bridged and that schools imbibe creative and problem-solving skills into their curricula. Although dance is our entry point but self-reliance is our goal. We hope to increase the skill development and academic achievement of children and young adults.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Many Nigerian children are unable to explore their artistic passions, not just because they lack the resources to, but because of negative stereotypes, unstable home lives, lack of awareness on possible futures in these art forms. Without any form of programmatic intervention or support, such boys and girls have little sufficiency, and no chance of creatively participating in their communities.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Prompted by the challenges in our community, Slum to Stage utilises the power of dance to create safe creative communities, providing access to artistic opportunities and life-skills development. We are closing the gap between arts & academic education in classrooms, by campaigning for academic schools to imbibe creative and problem-solving skills into their curricula. We run a unique, carefully crafted program with easy-to-assimilate dance methods that help children and youths undergo ethical interactive transformation.

In January 2023, we launched the STS intensive training program which ran for four months (January-April). Trainees underwent intense four hour training in Ballet and modern dance styles, Under the supervision of professional dancers and counselors, the trainees developed behavioural skills like Teamwork, Creativity, and Discipline. The results have been impressive, as they have shown huge improvements in their dance abilities and character at home and in school.

How has it been spreading?

Some of our achievements over the last one year includes;
1. Maiden Event Launch- The STS initiative kicked off with an event hosted and sponsored by the Transcorp Hilton Hotel. We took children from the slums, trained them, and they performed at the luxurious hotel. This was done to remind them to dream beyond their physical environment.
2. An Art Exhibition at the African Creative Market Global held in Lagos. We used this platform to fundraise for the children benefiting from the program.
3. Dance School Tour. We visited 20 Schools in Abuja to create enlightenment on the importance of harmonising Academic & Creative skills

Our Goal for the next 2 years is to partner with international organisations for diverse education, to find creative ways to solve the UN SDG 4 in our community.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Implementation steps

RESEARCH & DATA ANALYSIS
Research about the problem you hope to use this innovation to solve. Gather data on the communities and beneficiaries of the solution program.
BUILD TRAINING PROGRAMS
Build training curriculums, and develop methodologies that support your innovation, and enhance the results you hope to achieve in the communities
GATHER RESOURCES
Gather your human resources: It is important to gather team members who are skilled, competent and headed in the direction of the innovation in the long term. You do this through a Call for Volunteers. Gather financial resources: You can do this through fundraising. Do not be tempted to ask only corporations and government institutions alone. Explore individual donors as well.
PARTNERSHIPS
Send proposals to organisations with similar interests, or visions that complement your innovations and explore creative ways to jointly reach desired results.
IMPLEMENT THE TRAINING PROGRAMS
Here, you implement your training schedule. Create class objectives. Execute the training using the curriculum as a guide. Develop tracking systems, to keep record on the progress of the students. Trainings should last for at least 3 months, and should have a life-span.
REVIEW & REPEAT
During monthly progress report meetings, review strategies and repeat the ones that works.
IMPACT OF TRAINING ON ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS
As the training program draws to an end for a particularly cohort, compare the impact of the training program on the academic achievements of the children. Watch out for areas where the socio-behavioural skills developed in dance class, has helped the children perform better in school.
EVENTS
Use events as platforms, to showcase students talent, artistry and over all creative improvements. Events can be a great medium to raise funds and build partnerships to better your innovation program
