About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

No one organization alone can transform teaching and learning to better serve today’s young people, so Remake Learning helps bring them together -- with equity at the center. Our network, established in 2007, is a remarkable group of interconnected, creative, and innovative people who are grounded in the learning sciences and contemporary learning practices.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Remake Learning is a regional learning network working together to ignite engaging, relevant, and equitable learning opportunities for young people.

Remake Learning cultivates the Pittsburgh region's capacity for equitable innovation in education through five roles:

-Convening a diverse and inclusive community of practice through meetups, lunch & learns, and networking events
-Catalyzing equitable, engaging, and relevant approaches to learning by making grants to educators in and out of school
-Communicating opportunities, resources, and stories of learning remade to local and global audiences
-Coordinating cross-sector working groups on key focus areas such as STEM/STEAM, computer science, professional learning, youth voice, shifting power in educational research, personalized learning, and more
-Championing the future of learning through public events, celebrations, campaigns, and the annual Remake Learning Days festival

How has it been spreading?

What's happened in Pittsburgh has inspired and influenced regional learning ecosystems and networks elsewhere -- across the United States from California to North Carolina, from Tennessee to Chicago; and also across the world, from New Zealand to Spain.

And, over the years, the educators involved in Remake Learning have been recognized with such honors as the Disruptor Award, the Digital Innovation in Learning Awards (presented by Digital Promise and EdSurge), PBS Innovator Awards, Infy Maker Awards, and membership in the League of Innovative Schools.

What is Remake Learning?
In 2017, following months of engagement with hundreds of network members, Remake Learning released a revised mission, vision, and values statement to guide its work. What is Remake Learning? presents the full scope of the mission, the breadth of the vision, and the depth of the values that govern how Remake Learning works to ignite engaging, relevant, and equitable learning.
Chairmans Award
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-Y95O-KmxkRemake Learning was honored with the 2019 Chairman's Award at the annual Carnegie Science Awards.By cultivating an expansive network of members that create future-ready, engaging, and equitable learning experiences for children and educators, Remake Learning has changed the way that education does business in the greater Pittsburgh region. Twelve years ago, the founding members recognized that youth in the digital age were pursuing knowledge differently, particularly when learning about science, technology, engineering, and math. They identified the need to help educators connect with their students through engaging learning opportunities – both in and out of the classroom – that equip them with the relevant knowledge and skills required in today’s world. The formation of the Remake Learning Council brought together leading executives and learning scientists in business, higher education, public education, civic and cultural organizations, foundations, and government to strategically support the region’s efforts to remake learning in all the places where children and youth learn. As a leader in the Pittsburgh Regional STE(A)M Ecosystem, Remake Learning is at the center of a cross-sector collaboration to develop a regional vision, goals, and metrics for continuous improvement of STEM and STEAM learning opportunities, especially in under-served communities.
