About the innovation

Play. Learn. Grow.

Press Start Academy is a groundbreaking after-school education concept where all learning takes place via play and games.

Our programs are designed using gamification and game-based learning concepts, focusing on academic outcomes and assessment while in a compelling, hands-on and engaging game environment.

We approach learning through play and games from four different levels:

  • Adapting existing off-the-shelf educational games, or wrapping non-educational games in educational contexts, focusing on thematic topics (e.g. history, economics) and soft skills (e.g. creative writing, strategy);
  • Developing customized game experiences to meet educational objectives in specific environments (e.g. curriculum design in partnership with schools and educational institutions);
  • Creating "meta-game" environments where learners' achievements and progress are reflected and tracked in a bigger game, designed to incentivize positive learning habits; and
  • Posing game design challenges to students, where they apply systems thinking and design thinking approaches to make sense of and teach a particular subject.

We deliver our innovative programs in three different ways:

  • After-school learning programs direct to students at our center in Central, Hong Kong;
  • Enrichment, after-school, extracurricular and holiday programs in partnership with schools; and
  • Professional development and teacher training workshops designed to equip educators with awareness, knowledge and skills in gamification, learning through play and game-based program design.

Press Start Academy is the next chapter in the continued evolution of Press Start Hong Kong, a games consultancy with a vision to change the world through play, and to unlock the unique potential of play and games as a platform for education, innovation and inspiration.

May 2020: Learn To Be A Game Designer w/ OWN Academy & DCSG
5 days, 2 games played, 3 design stages, 3 game design ideas ✌️ In May 2020, we ran an intensive game design program with a group of 11 students from Dulwich College Singapore, as part of a career exploration partnership with OWN Academy. We played Railroad Ink and Viticulture as the basis for game critique and analysis; learned about game design principles and the design cycle; looked at a case study from Press Start Hong Kong's portfolio; explored the tabletop and mobile game industries and their business and marketing trends; embarked on three design stages in groups; and arrived at three excellent game design ideas - all within the space of 9 hours 💪 This program was facilitated online. We made use of Zoom, Tabletopia and Google Docs as our distance learning tools. Flip through some of these screenshots to get a teaser of the experience!

Easter 2020 Holiday Program: Legends of Tomorrow
Century City, get ready for the arrival of your new superheroes: Bolt, Dr. Lupin and Tama! 🦸🏻‍♂️ It was so much fun to go on this role-playing adventure with Brian, Christian and Gratian as they worked together to build their characters, solve investigative puzzles and defend Century City from its latest supervillain - all while developing their collaboration, creativity, strategy and storytelling skills. Guided by Game Master and instructor Rhys, we conducted a lively post-campaign debrief at the end of a productive and fun 9 hours, with discussions on narrative structure, character development and team dynamics. Due to the ongoing coronavirus epidemic, this program was facilitated online. We made use of Zoom, Roll20 and Google Docs as our distance learning tools to replicate our unique analogue learning experiences in an online setting.
