Bridging the gap between vulnerability and prosperity through SEL.

Labhya partners with Indian state governments to co-create & ensure effective implementation of state-wide daily SEL classes integrated in the school day. We have co-created and are ensuring effective implementation of the world’s largest & India’s first at-scale SEL programs. Our programs are enabling 2.5 million vulnerable children across 2 states of India to become healthy, effective learners.

“To not feel like you are alone. To feel a sense of purpose and belonging. To feel complete. Today these are seen as luxuries. We want to create a world where these are seen as rights.”

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

The 128 Million Children studying in the public schools of India are multidimensionally poor with most of them surviving on a household income of $2 or less a day. These children are disproportionately affected by unique vulnerabilities and mental health issues. The Indian public education system currently lacks the capability to enable these children to prosper during and beyond schooling.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Labhya Foundation partners with governments to co-create scalable & localised SEL programs for vulnerable children across public education systems. Labhya provides end-to-end support through co-creation of curriculum, teacher capacity building, monitoring & evaluation and support in effective implementation.

This has translated into existing public school teachers conducting a daily SEL class that has been integrated within the school day. Our programs enable our children to form stronger relationships, have a higher interest in learning and have increased emotional resilience.

Our programs are creating safe spaces in classrooms that equip children with the essential skills required to become healthy, effective learners.

During an external evaluation of our Delhi's pilot program (the “Happiness Curriculum”) by the Boston Consulting Group, over four thousand teachers were interviewed, with 87% of them reporting that our program had a tangible positive impact on their students.

How has it been spreading?

Our main achievements are:
> Co-created and ensured effective implementation of the world’s largest & India’s first SEL programs namely ‘Happiness Curriculum’ & ‘Anandam Pathyacharya’ with the Governments of Delhi & Uttarakhand respectively to impact 2.5 Million children.
> Finalist, WISE Awards 2020 by Qatar Foundation
> Official Solution Partner to Generation Unlimited India, UNICEF
> Supported and mentored by various partners like Harvard University, The Nudge Foundation and UNDP India

Our objectives for the next 3 years are:
> To expand our operations to 3 more state governments to impact 7 million vulnerable children across India
> To capacitate our existing and upcoming government partners to conduct state-wide student-level SEL assessments

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Labhya creates open source localised curricula that is accessible globally through our government partners’ websites. We intentionally make our curricula available in order to encourage educators to create safe spaces in their classrooms. Our in-house SEL curriculum in English, designed for low-income contexts, can be made available to potential global partners on request- contact@labhya.org

HundrED Academy Reviews
By formalizing SEL into the regular school curricula this initiative can have a great long-last impact on millions of children. Independent studies have collected data that support their effort to build healthier learning environments.
High scalability evidenced by data, global engagement, and membership within India. Additionally, the clarity of the purpose and values enhances the innovation and the potential for greater scalability beyond India, engaging with wider SEL community.
