Transforming education is possible. All you need is passion for education, leadership and a methodology of the process of change. Horizon 2020 is an experience that shows a path to change.

About the innovation

What is Horizon 2020?

Horizon 2020 saw that schooling hadn’t really changed over the past hundred years and still worked on the basis of one teacher, one class, one hour per lesson. Students were being prepared for jobs that no longer existed and were missing out on learning key skills. To meet the current and future needs, schooling needed a total transformation.

Horizon 2020 – Reimagine Education is not about implementing small innovations in the classroom. It is about changing the System to have a new Education focused around the person and where Students are the center.

Horizon 2020 is proud to be a disruptive innovation. A network of 8 Jesuit schools have disrupted traditional notions of schooling and changed the way teachers teach and learners learn. Through doing so, they are preparing their students for life in the 21st century.

By drawing on progressive innovative pedagogies and theories of learning, Horizon 2020 schools moved towards project-based learning. Students identify project areas and teachers work collaboratively to design projects which integrate a range of skills and subject disciplines. Timetables are built around projects rather than subjects and the continual evaluation is embedded into the process.

Where traditionally one class would work with one teacher, here groups of up to 65 students work with teams of 2 or 3 teachers. Working on projects such as designing a new theme park draws not only develops knowledge in a range of subject areas but also develops 21st century skills such as teamwork, problem solving and creativity.

From the beginning of the innovation, Horizon 2020 has involved parents and the local community in a participative process. Their views on the future of education were considered through the process. Dialogue between students and their families seems to have improved as the students are keen to share their learning at home. Parents themselves are eager to send their children to these new schools.

Teachers feel more connected to their vocation and have moved beyond being a subject teacher to being part of team which collaborates to provide learning contexts which cross traditional subject boundaries. Students see their teachers working in this way and it helps them develop their own team building abilities.

Impact & scalability

Impact & Scalability

Innovativeness

Horizon 2020 aims to continuously incorporate new discoveries in pedagogy, psychology and neuroscience, in order to effectively educate people for the 21st century and beyond. They want to create well-rounded, competent, conscientious, compassionate, creative and committed individuals.

Impact

Evaluations have shown that academic results have remained consistent but the outcomes of social- emotional learning and skills based learning have improved. Educating in this way has developed the spirituality, identity and self-worth of students. They feel more passionate about their learning and are better equipped for their futures. Horizon 2020's methodology outlines that it is vital to measure the educational impact in the students, families and schools: a foundation already exists the first evaluation of Horizon’s 2020 – Reimagine Education methodology, carried out by several international research groups. This evaluation can be found at the series of books published by this project, in a book titled “EVALUATING THE FIRTS PILOT EXPERIENCE, 35 facts to measure educational changes”(http://h2020.fje.edu/en/books/).

Scalability

Horizon 2020 has been successful 13,500 students and 1,300 teachers and educators. Horizon 2020 schools are charter schools and belong to the not for profit Jesuit foundation. They are representative of society as the schools are based in socio-economically contrasting areas. This has enabled them to show that their pedagogical approach can work for all children regardless of background.

Implementation steps

Learn how to implement the Horizon 2020 methodology
The innovator has published a series of books in Spanish, Catalan and English to support schools that wish to transform

Based on the experience gained in Horizon 2020 – Reimagine Education, a new methodology to help School Managers to implement a similar transformation in their Schools was born. The key elements of this new methodology are:

  • To put the student in the centre of the learning process

  • Define the model of person we want to educate for

  • Establish the impacts and outcomes we want to achieve

  • Change the Classroom’s methodologies so the student learns by doing, working in an active way, participating in teams and in an interdisciplinary nature

  • Encouraging a fundamental and critical participatory process with all the educational community (students, families, educators, teachers and their social and economic environment)

  • Constant evaluation of the process of change and its impact on the person.

There are 9 books published in a collection called “Transforming Education”, that present and explain the innovation made in Horizon 2020 and its process.

You can download them for free at: http://h2020.fje.edu/en/books/, on this website there are also videos and other interesting material to learn from.
