About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Forecast to grow to $15.5 trillion worldwide by 2030, Construction is a global industry that needs exceptional STEM and digital talent. Its transition to net zero is critical. It needs a generation of problem solvers, innovators and entrepreneurs. However, it is perceived as a male dominated, low-skilled manual industry. Design Engineer Construct! is the change the industry and education needs.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Children and young people experience the digital Built Environment through the ‘Design Engineer Construct!’ (“DEC”) Learning Programme, providing them with a unique opportunity to develop the knowledge, competencies, behaviours and skills fundamental to successful careers in architecture, engineering and construction.

Students improve numeracy and literacy skills and STEM knowledge through real-world applied learning, advancing digital skills using industry standard digital modelling and analysis tools for net-zero building and infrastructure design.

Aligning with the SDGs, the themes of social, environmental and economic sustainability run throughout the programme - learners discover how to minimise their own and their community’s impact on the planet through role play and project based learning.

They understand the value of inclusivity and diversity, designing for a world where everyone matters and an industry that needs a new generation of climate-focused professionals.

How has it been spreading?

Design Engineer Construct! (‘DEC’) launched in leading STEM school, Cecil Andrews College, Perth, Australia. 'DEC bootcamps' are running in Malaysia in collaboration with the Penang STEM initiative and Prince of Wales Island International School and DEC has been delivered in Bangkok’s Shrewsbury School to primary school pupils for the past 2 years. DEC has been delivered at Fairgreen International School, Dubai, for 3 years where learners will advance to DEC Level 3 this September. Schools in Lithuania use ‘DEC Awards’ and Ireland’s Construction Industry Federation used our 'Home for Everyone' Award in the 2021 national schools challenge. Our online work experience programme reached 2000 children during lockdown and continues to operate, soon to be introduced to children with SEND.

Design Engineer Construct! is accessible to all learners and teachers. Hosted on our ‘DEC School’ online platform, we offer a wide range of ‘DEC Awards’ - small introductory projects that can be used to enrich the STEM curriculum before embarking on the more advanced DEC Level 1, 2 and 3 study programmes. The online platform is available to everyone through DEC Central, where interested participants can access small projects to enhance STEM skills and knowledge, and then a larger curriculum can be accessed through contacting DEC!

On the morning of 25th March, COYO was delighted to welcome 100 Design Engineer Construct! students from King Ecgbert School, UTC Warrington, Fairgreen International School, Fulham Cross Academy, Heathcote School, Sir George Monoux College, Drummond Community High School and Cronton Sixth Form College to our inaugural "Future Leaders Forum".Chaired by Peter Hansford CBE FREng, we were joined by Dr. Nelson Ogunshakin OBE of the International Federation of  Consulting Engineers, Patricia Moore of Turner & Townsend, Sue Kershaw of Costain, Albert Williamson-Taylor of AKT II and Mark Thurston of HS2 for an hour and a half's live discussion and Q&A session to explore the personal qualities, professional characteristics and technical skills required by Built Environment leaders of the future.With some great questions fed in by students, our esteemed panel offered extraordinary insight into their own journeys into industry, their challenges, their hopes for the future and some great nuggets of wisdom. Feedback has been exceptional from students and teachers alike and COYO looks forward to the next Forum, we’ll be inviting more industry leaders to get involved.Patricia told our DEC students, "If you want to progress, stand in the shoes of a leader." And on 25th March, they were able to do just that.
“Design The COP” - The Centre for Our Planet
Over the years, Class Of Your Own (COYO) has partnered with the best in education and industry to spark children and young people’s interest in the Built Environment by focusing on themes that impact everyday lives.This year, a global event is happening in the UK that provides an extraordinary opportunity to focus on a theme that impacts the entire planet.From the 1st – 12th November 2021, the UK will host the 26th United Nations Climate Change ‘Conference of the Parties’ in partnership with Italy. ‘COP26’ is described as the most significant climate event since the 2015 Paris Agreement when world leaders will meet in Glasgow to report on their progress to reduce carbon emissions to “net zero”.We all know that young people care deeply about the future of their planet.Even little children know when they care for living things, they grow and flourish. They learn by doing and understand cause and effect. COP26 offers a chance for children and young people to believe that adults care too and are doing everything they can to protect their world by acting on the guidance of great scientists.Climate change. Carbon Emissions. Net Zero. Global Warming. Environmental Degradation. Species Extinction. These headline grabbing issues can be overwhelming for the Earth’s younger custodians. They express fear, anger and frustration at the apparent lack of progress of world leaders in the face of scientific evidence.But for many, the science can be complex to understand, especially when contradicted by those who don’t believe in it.Make STEAM coolClass Of Your Own is working with ‘After the Pandemic’, a Glasgow-born initiative, to offer children an opportunity to explore and engage in climate science in their own creative way. With the support of land-owner and property developer Dandara Living, “After the Pandemic” is transforming 3000sqm of land in the heart of Glasgow into a cultural and creative park in the run up to and during COP26. The park will play host to pavilions, exhibitions and events which respond directly to the climate emergency by putting Glasgow’s people and communities at the heart of the discussion.Design The COPThis year’s Class Of Your Own Challenge is to “Design The COP”, the “Centre for Our Planet” for children and young people, where they can explore climate-related Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths. Sited in the “After the Pandemic” park, The COP will be Glasgow’s most sustainable, energy-efficient building. Integrating smart sensor technology, it will monitor itself and the local environment. A wide range of activities will be offered to enable children and young people of all ages to develop knowledge and skills to become Planet Earth ambassadors.After the Pandemic curator and project manager, Graham Hogg, said:“We are very excited to be working alongside COYO, giving young people a chance to respond to the biggest challenges we face as a global community.We hope their designs will highlight the need to provide education and learning spaces which respond to the climate emergency, during a time when the world’s eyes will be on Glasgow. We want to ensure the voice of young people is heard and at the very heart of that.”COYO’s collaboration with After the Pandemic aims to focus hearts and minds on a global challenge that affects us all.The challenge will enable children to explore and engage in climate science in their own creative way, through the design of their own exciting building.The COYO Challenge 2021 runs from March 15th – September 30th and is open to children and young people age 11-18 years old.Universities and organisations are encouraged to support local schools – please contact support@classofyourown.com for further information.

Implementation steps

Getting involved in Design Engineer Construct!

Design Engineer Construct! was originally created with the support of teachers, learners, academics and industry professionals – it continues to evolve with that same support.

DEC goes way beyond simply providing a route to academic success. It connects knowledge and understanding, skills and behaviours, resilience and empathy. It gives young people a sense of purpose to improve their planet and people lives.

Our teachers have more experience than they realise!

Most of our teachers teach STEM subjects, but begin with little knowledge of the Built Environment as an industry. DEC takes them on a journey that immerses them in the familiar world where they already live, work and play, so they begin to see it from a DEC perspective.
