About the innovation

Community Partnerships Support Next Generation Success

Whether students choose to pursue college or career, our goal is to prepare our students for success after high school.

With an increasing number of high priority occupations in our region related to advanced manufacturing, we formed partnerships with the industry leaders in our own backyard to help us prepare our students to be the next generation of leaders and innovators in our community and beyond.

One example is our partnership with Penn United Technologies. Through this partnership, we are able to offer students who are interested in advanced manufacturing a personalized learning experience in a real-world career setting, ensuring they graduate with the 21st Century skills required for success. In addition, students are able to earn industry certifications and even network with potential future employers before graduating from high school. To date, 100% of students who complete the program earned industry certifications. In addition, approximately 70% received a job offer.

Butler Area School District and Penn United Technologies are committed to ensuring the partnership meets both the needs of our students as well as employers throughout the region. Moving forward, we are looking for opportunities to engage additional school districts and businesses to grow the program to both prepare students for a succsesful career after high school and help businesses find and hire professionals who have acquired the industry skills before they even graduate from high school.

When schools and community collaborate, students benefit.

Program helps students advance. Hands-on machinist work gives experience.
Butler Eagle Reporter Tanner Cole recently wrote a feature article about the partnership between Butler Area School District and Penn United Technologies. It was published on March 12, 2019. "JEFFERSON TWP — A preapprenticeship program is elevating machinist work as a post-graduation college alternative for Butler Senior High School students.  Take Chad Meier, a 17-year-old senior from Fenelton, for instance. Chad was accepted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in December, but he's still awaiting financial aid information to decide his future. In the meantime, he's weighing machinist work as a career option, too. He's found the skills pair well with engineering.  “I really like making stuff,” Chad said. “This is just the physical side of it. You can design anything on a computer, but then there are a lot of limitations on these machines to work around.” The machines he referenced were the mills and CNC machines in a workshop at Penn United Technologies. He's been learning his way around the shop in the preapprenticeship program the company conducts with students from several school districts throughout Butler County. Penn United previously taught classes called SATS, or “Students Acquiring Technical Skills,” but now offers more possible state and national certifications through the preapprenticeship program. The switch happened after last school year. " Read more: http://www.butlereagle.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20190312/NEWS01/703129940
Gaining Recognition and Support
In year two, the partnership caught the attention -- and generous support -- of Kawneer Cranberry and Arconic Foundation.   "Arconic Foundation and Kawneer Cranberry are honored to support the Butler Pre-Apprenticeship Program, a partnership between Penn United Technologies and the Butler Area School District, in their work to prepare the next generation of the manufacturing workforce. Partnering with the Program is a great opportunity to highlight manufacturing careers and to develop and strengthen the skills we are looking for as an employer”. - Nathalie Tessier, Kawneer Cranberry General Manager
