About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

The world is evolving - 65% of kids will work in jobs that don’t yet exist. In order to thrive, our children will need to learn how to cope with ambiguity and be agile in uncertainty. Yet, schools are stuck in the industrial age and cannot be counted on to meet the evolving needs of our young learners. As a father of five, this greatly concerned me and so I started Doyobi to address this problem.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Doyobi teaches learning skills that are designed to help kids become more effective learners, preparing them to thrive in a complex, uncertain and ambiguous world. We focus our efforts around the 6 Cs of 21st century competencies: critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity, citizenship and confidence.

Doyobi runs weekly cohort-based sessions in the metaverse where kids between the ages of 8-12 come together from all over the world to go on adventure quests, which are designed and facilitated in-house by our team based on the principles of Learning through Tinkering. The kids team up to collaborate and solve real-life like crisis simulations that they encounter in the quests, stretching their thinking ability in the safe learning environment provided by the metaverse. In the process, we track their progression and have seen them form relationships with each other, learn how to make better decisions, understand themselves better, and develop resilience.

How has it been spreading?

In the past year, we've taken the time to develop a product that kids love and meets learning objectives. As a result, we now have more parents on our waitlist than slots available. We're also grateful to have been recognized as one of the ten winners of the Octava Social Innovation Challenge, powered by MIT Solve and supported by the UBS Optimus Foundation.

Moving ahead, we're laser-focused on further developing the Doyobi metaverse experience to optimize for learner engagement and learning outcomes. Subsequently, scale will be realized through four different dimensions so that we can impact the lives of as many children as possible - geographical expansion, widening of the age bands we serve, partnerships with educational institutions, and localization.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

If you're a parent with a child that's between 8-12 years old, simply head on over to https://www.doyobi.com/ and join the waitlist!

If you don't have a child in that age bracket but would like to find out more anyway, write in to us at partnerships@doyobi.com. We welcome any opportunities to explore potential collaborations!
